③Studying and Free Time

For the students, this week has mostly been about studying and getting to know the school and their classmates.

Everyone is settling in very well and I am hearing and seeing many positive things from the teachers. I can see that everyone is doing their best.

Since joining their classes on Monday, the students have spent their time studying hard. On Tuesday, to have a break and to introduce the students to the game centre, we all went bowling.

At the bowling alley, students played a few games and activities in the game centre before they started bowling. They looked like they were having lots of fun. After bowling, some students ate out at a local restaurant.

On Fridays in Bell, school finishes early, so the students had some free time to explore. They all had a great afternoon and enjoyed the last of the good weather. The weekend got very very cold.

②The First Day at Bell English School

On Monday morning, we had an early start. We met at Bell at 8:30, but some of the students discovered that buses in England don’t usually run on time.

After taking a language test and having a tour of the school, students were separated into their class levels and were taken to their classrooms by 11:40. Some students were a little shocked, saying, “What? We are starting study today?” Mr. Yamada and I just laughed and wished them luck.

It was a busy first day at school, and I think everyone is starting to feel the jet-lag, but at the end of the first day of classes, students were excited. Some were a little shocked about the level of the classes. I let them know that their worries about being able to speak are the same worries that we have every year, but if they keep trying hard they will get used to it and start to improve. Everyone seems ready to accept the challenge.

On Tuesday, we start the first full day of classes at Bell, and in the evening we are going to do some bowling. Hopefully, the jet-lag will wear off soon!

①Cambridge 2018 – We all made it safely to Cambridge!

On Saturday, we arrived in London after 12 hours on the plane. From London, we had a bus ride and we arrived in Cambridge at around 19:15. Taxis were waiting to take everyone to their homestays and we handed out the students’ bus tickets and final instructions before they headed off. It all went smoothly, and that evening, everyone was in their new home, eating dinner, and getting ready for bed.

On Sunday morning, we all met at Bell English school before heading into the city center. We started with a challenge where everyone had to find some popular spots. The students did quite well, with most of the teams finding the places on the map. There was then some free time before we met up again at Fitzwilliam museum. That evening, everyone made their way back home to have dinner with their families. The first full day was over, and everyone was quite comfortable using the bus to get around Cambridge and were able to get back to their homestays by themselves with little or no problem.
