Day 1~4: Arrival, Bell, Scones
After four years, we are able to run the regular Cambridge English study trip!
This year, we have 20 senior high school 1st-grade students studying in Cambridge for two weeks. All the students are at homestays, and they are studying at the prestigious Bell School in Cambridge, UK. Bell is a beautiful school, with large grounds, a games room, a soccer field, and another large playing field. It’s a 10-minute bus ride to the city centre and is within walking distance from most of the homestays.
Day 1: 3.14 (Tue)
After meeting in Haneda at 7am on Tuesday morning, everyone got through check-in and security, ready for the 14-hour flight to London. The flight was long but there were no issues. At Heathrow, Japanese can now use the e-gates, so that was much faster than usual. We were on the bus to Cambridge within an hour of landing. The bus went to each homestay, and students were met at the door, taken to their rooms, and served their first meal. All in all, a very long, but successful first day.
Day 2: 3.15 (Wed)
Everyone arrived at Bell school on time on Wednesday morning. To decide on the classes, there was a speaking and writing test. While the Bell teachers judged the levels and class placements, students were given a quick introduction and tour of the school. Then it was time to study!
Coming out of their first class, it was good to see lots of smiling faces. Then we had lunch. We were all happy that the Bell canteen has some great options.
After the final class, there was an activity at held in the canteen – Pizza making. From the base to the toppings, Kaetsu students joined other Bell students in making pizza. They all turned out great and were delicious (but may have filled them up a little before they went back to their homestays for dinner). During this time, many of the boys enjoyed the games room, with a pool table, table tennis, table football, and more.
Day 4: 3.16~17 (Thur~Fri)
Thursday was a regular day of classes at Bell and students played some sports after school or headed off home to their homestays. On Friday, Bell has a half day of classes. After lunch, we jumped on a bus to Grantchester. This is a very quaint and traditional little village around 10 minutes from Cambridge. It has a famous apple orchard that serves the best scones in the UK (maybe). Everyone had a scone, with clotted cream and jam, along with some English Breakfast tea. Just delicious! After eating, there was a chance to walk around the area a little. Luckily, the sun came out (for the first time), and made a walk in the area that much more pleasant.
Students headed home, ready for a weekend in London and then Cambridge city centre.
