SNSと政治
激戦を繰り広げている共和党のドナルド・トランプ米大統領（74）と民主党のジョー・バイデン前副大統領（77）が争うアメリカ大統領選で私が注目したのはSNSの利用だ。著名人が投票するように呼び掛けることや、公式アカウントを通してオンライン上で支援者を増やそうとする動きが今回多く見られた。これはSNSの普及や、演説などの活動がしづらい環境になったという時代背景によって生まれたものであると考えられる。今回の投票では約1億6千万人が投票し、投票率が67％と、4年前に比べて7％も上昇し、過去100年で最も高くなると予測されている。本文では大統領選におけるSNSの影響、そしてこれからもSNSを政治的な活動にも利用していくべきかについて述べていく。
バイデン氏は、今年の三月に動画配信サイトYoutubeにおいて動画を配信したり、15歳の支持者が作成したインスタグラムアカウントを公式アカウントとして取得するなど、積極的なSNSの利用が見られた。様々な見方が存在すると思うが、すでに多くのフォロワーが存在した若い支持者のアカウントを利用することは、支持者もボランティアであったとは言え、善意でやってたことを自身の政治的な活動に利用することはいかがなものだろうか。
10月14日に「バイデン氏の息子がバイデン氏とウクライナの企業幹部を引き合わせた」というタブロイド紙の報道を、Twitterは情報の出どころが怪しいという判断からリツイート（拡散）を出来なくする措置をとった。ところが、トランプ陣営がバイデン氏にとって不利な情報を規制していると反発すると、Twitterは措置を撤回した。このことから見て取れるように、運営企業でさえも情報の信憑性を判断することができていないのも現状である。他にも、「オサマ・ビン・ラディンの殺害はでっちあげだった」というツイートを、トランプ大統領がリツイートしたことに対して自身は「ただ他人の意見をリツイートしただけ」と釈明したことも物議を醸している。内容だけでなくインフルエンサーと呼ばれる立場の人間は、人々に及ぼす影響の大きさも考えてSNSを利用すべきだと考える。簡単に情報を拡散することのできるSNSが普及するにつれ、軽率な発言によって生じる「炎上」等のニュースも最近では多く見受けられることもSNSの危険性の一つを表していると思う。
SNSの積極的利用には、今まで投票率の低かった若者へのアピールに成功しているが、それと同時により多くの情報が多くの人の目に入るようにもなった。SNSでは自分の見たい記事や自分の調べて来たことに関連した情報が表示されるため、情報の偏りがある可能性も頭の片隅に置きながら関わっていく必要がある。友だちとの交流や情報共有を楽しむ場であったSNSを情報戦の主戦場とするのは、誤解を招くことへとつながり、いずれは国や世界などの大きな規模で影響を及ぼす可能性がある。私は政治活動とSNSは混同するべきではないと考え、情報を見極めるためにそれぞれがメディアリテラシーを持ち、SNSのみに左右されないことを浸透させていくことの必要性を強く感じた。匿名で自由に書き込むことのできる「無法地帯」において、どれだけ偏り無く自分の考えを確立させることができるかが、今後の政治とSNSのつながりをより信憑性の高いものへとするのではないだろうか。

The 2020 US Presidential Election
As I write this, Former Vice President Joe Biden is 6 electoral votes away from securing the presidency. Or is he? President Donald Trump has made a number of claims contesting the validity of the election on Twitter, to an audience of more than 88 million followers.
A number of Trump’s tweets have been flagged by Twitter. One, claiming the state of Pennsylvania had gone to Trump had a tag attached reading as follows (was tagged with): ‘Official sources may not have called the race when this was tweeted’. Another tweet, making insinuations that a large number of ballots had been dumped in Michigan, was also flagged. ‘Some or all of the content shared in this Tweet is disputed and might be misleading about an election or other civic process.’ The Trump Administration has reportedly started attempts to use courts to dispute the voting procedures in a number of the states already called, and will no doubt continue to do so in the future. Even if Biden does eventually take Nevada, maintain his slight edge in Arizona, and thus reach the 270 electoral votes needed to become president, the conflict is nowhere near over.
A president who undermines his country’s voting system, and democracy itself. A leader who failed to lead when the country needed him most. More than 200,000 Americans lie dead because of the coronavirus. A large number of these deaths could have been prevented, if not for a bungling, lying, incompetent commander-in-chief. And yet, when I Google the words ‘US presidential election’, and look at the tally of votes, the popular vote, the electoral map, what I do not see is unity. More than 71 million Americans voted for Joe Biden. But more than 68 million voted for Donald Trump. The map showing the 50 states of the Union, thrown into sharp contrast of blue and red.
This is not 2016, where these votes could have been excused, explained away as naivete, or wishful thinking that Donald Trump would be a decent president, a responsible leader. This is 2020. Even after 4 years of rule, of seeing him in action, there are still tens of millions of Americans who would rather see Donald Trump as president for another 4 years. If Biden is elected, this is something that cannot be forgotten. The margin between the winner and the loser in this election will be slight. And no matter who becomes the president, they must remember something. That they are not the president of just those who voted for them, but the other 49% as well. America is greatly divided, and the election has only highlighted those differences.
What has caused such a large break in the US? Perhaps it is the recent emergence of social media, where each and every person is presented with a curated view of society, showing what they want to see, and only that, becoming close-minded, and even radicalized. Perhaps it is the anger against measures like a lockdown and mandatory masks, fighting an enemy you cannot see. Yes, more than 200,000 people have died, but the number of people who can say they know someone who was severely impacted by the virus itself is yet small. Increasingly, the impact is economic. Perhaps it is the ever-growing gaps in our society, whether it be race, money, or education.
America has long been the shining beacon of hope, freedom, and democracy in our world. Even through financial crises, wars, police brutality and more, America has remained in its place as something to strive for, the American Dream. But during the last 4 years, this particular administration has torn down those expectations, wreaking havoc on the image of American supremacy, and revealing pillars of sand. While the coronavirus could not have been predicted, there are so many more conflicts occurring within the US that cause many outside it to stop and stare.
The United States is a superpower, but she is one in desperate need of repair. The differences in values and ideas that are splitting the country could tear it in two. This election was important. But no matter its result, the struggle is only beginning.
